I have been thinking about doing one of these threads for the longest time. Well, after reading hognuts, I have finally came to the conclusion keeping a daily record can hopefully motivate me back into shape.

Over the past 10 years I have gained about 20-30lbs. Although I was 215 but just about 10% body fat, now I am 235 and 28%. I can feel it more with age too, and having a business, I need to start taking better care of myself.

My goal is to get to the gym at least 3 times a week, but would like 4-5 times. Emphazing on cardio and getting my cholestrel in check and light weight lifting.

My 3 month goal is to have 20 pounds gone and have my LDL under 100 and my HDL under 200.

I will use this thread to chart my daily progress. Even if I slip up and eat like shit, it will be charted here.

For those of you that are thinking of doing this, I'd say there is no time better than now.

Got up this morning, weighed myself.

Starting weight: 238
Body Fat 31%

Today has been a day from hell. Had some major water damage at my main location over the years. The current owner never made the repairs, so they worsened. Any ways, I had the mold crew come in and strip this mofo down, so today, was RE-BUILD day! I had to put up 150 ceiling tiles cutting many individually. So, this was my cardio for today, up and down a damn ladder, sweeping, mopping, etc...

Breakfast. Light English muffin and 3 pieces of morning star sausage with OJ my multi-vit and fish oil.

lunch, had to go out, but went to panera bread, turkey, lettuce, tomato and onion only, and chips.

banana , V-8(low sodium)for snack

dinner will be a turkey burger, home made fresh cut baked fries and some brochlie

So far, today has been good, just a bit drained ffrom the rebuild for 9+ hours.

dont discount weight lifting for losing weight. the more muscle you have, the higher your metobolic rate will be. the higher your metobolic rate, the more calories you burn all day even when sleeping, sitting on the couch etc. good luck

One small bit of advice. Drink a glass of water while you are drinking your beer. Beer dehydrates you like crazy and in turns slows the metabolism. Drinking water while drinking beer actually helps to balance.

Also recommend weight training over aerobic exercise. If you only have time for one or the other, weight training is more beneficial.

Also a believer in weight loss being more about how much you eat, rather than what you eat. Make sure you keep your portions small. Your stomach will shrink and you get used to it pretty quick. You will get nearly the same feeling of fullness with just a fraction of the food.

Good luck

Updated weigh-in, 235, could be better but 3lbs is better than gaining

Not sure how you can say beer or alcohol doesn't slow your metabolism; Ive seen many articles that will disagree with you. But if it works for you, keep with it.

Keep up the program and the 20lbs will be off soon.

I use to think the same thing. Research it a bit more. I am learning more and more I would rather consume whole foods as calories, things that fill you up other than drinking them.

Bigbet,

Here is a few of the articles I found:

The New England Journal of Medicine published the results of a Swiss study showing that if you're on a 1,250 calorie diet and get just 250 of those calories from alcohol, it can slow your metabolism by 36%.

Alcohol interferes with the metabolism of protein and fat in the liver, and alcohol causes impaired production of pancreatic enzymes needed for fat metabolism. An inability to mobilize body fat and high blood lipid (fat) levels may result. Liver glycogen may become depleted along with an inability of the liver to form new glucose. (2) The end result is the body of the alcohol user will have a strong tendency to store body fat and a very hard time gaining or maintaining lean body mass. An alcohol user's energy, strength and endurance levels will drop hindering the desire to exercise, further complicating the problem.

In this study, eight men were given two drinks of vodka and lemonade separated by 30 minutes. Each drink contained just under 90 calories. Fat metabolism was measured before and after consumption of the drink. For several hours after drinking the vodka, whole body lipid oxidation (a measure of how much fat your body is burning) dropped by 73%.

"Here's the problem with all alcoholic beverages, and the reason I recommend refraining from alcohol consumption on the diet. Alcohol, whenever taken in, is the first fuel to burn. While that's going on, your body will not burn fat. This does not stop the weight loss, it simply postpones it, since the alcohol does not store as glycogen, and you immediately go back into ketosis/lipolysis after the alcohol is used up.

I used to think drinking a beer or two a night didn't matter much, but when I'm on a "get leaner" mission I avoid it completely.

I have been on "the wagon" for 70 days and have dropped from 205lbs to 190lbs without any additional exercise or changes in my eating habits. Not drinking makes a huge differnece. The funny thing is I went on the wagon to give the old liver a rest, but the weight loss is certainly a bonus.

Good luck.
